View Article  Final weekend before Baja Ha-Ha begins

The most special thing about San Diego is the weather!  We've had to take the bad with the good.  Mike has a list of new leaks to mend in the boat-- luckily they are small!  We have had lots of rain here over the past 4 days.

We have done all the errands and completed almost all the projects we can do before leaving....  anticipation is building!

We're busy meeting and getting to know some great people--many from Oregon and Washington who have sailed down a long ways, through challenging seas to get to San Diego.  We've just about met all the people at the dock we're at and most are also leaving on the Ha-Ha!

So, after Monday's 11:00 start, our next major port will be Cabo.  We anchor two times on the way down: at Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria.  There are over 160 boats going on the cruise.  Our crew, Phil and Nora arrive tomorrow.  We've enjoyed a lovely sail last night with Linda and Dave, our cousins who came down for the afternoon and evening and the break in the storm!!!

We were able to attend a seminar on the Sea of Cortes and all the great places to visit there.  It has a stark beauty of desert and sea and many of the anchorages are off the beaten path enough that you may be the only boat anchored there.

No new photos here because we've been too busy to stop for a minute to take any.

Thanks so much for following the blog--it's going to get more interesting as the cruise goes on!

We anchored at Dana Point anchorage.  It's oposite to the Ocean Institute, an educational program that does simulations of life on the sea, with two tall ships: Pilgrim, a replica of the Richard Henry Dana boat and Spirit of Dana Point, a privateer that is a Smithsonian replica of boats used as "official" pirate ships of some of the original colonies.  We were lucky to be invited (shanghi'd) to be crew on the afternoon voyage of Spirit.  It was great fun.  See the pictures in the Southern California photo album!  They have a great educational program which we were able to observe over the days we were anchored right next to Spirit.  We even had a group of kids row by singing sea "chantey's" to us!  Came to San Diego yesterday and are embarking on final preparations for Mexico.  I'll be doing another article about the Ha Ha prior to our start on Oct. 25th!
View Article  Things you might not find in Mexico
Otherwise the title could be Julie's List.  Julie and Tim are our friends who currently have their boat in San Carlos, in the Sea of Cortez.  We've met up with them a number of times since they've left Mexico to work and get ready for the next season in Mexico.  Julie told me this list when we first got together and I think it's fun to know ahead of time what you might not find on a trip like this.  Cruisers frequent small towns and out of the way places that aren't close to a Sam's Club, which can be found in Mexico....  I'm not sure that's progress.

Julie's List:
U.S. stamps -- this is so you can give mail to folks returning to the US on the plane.  Mail is not always a certain thing in Mexico.
stainless steel locks -- things rust quickly in the salt air and you'll have the dingy to lock and countless other things.
plastic egg containers -- no cardboard is allowed on board due to Mexican bugs that like to hitch rides in packaging, so when provisioning in Mexico you transfer items to plastic.
chicken broth cubes or cans
fish, flora and fauna guides -- if you find these in Mexico they'll be in Spanish, and you'll constantly want to learn more about the wonderful wildlife you see.
no see-um screen --  this screen is probably smaller than regular mosquito netting.  It's even better not to go to San Blas where these stinging bugs come out morning and evening.
batteries
paper products -- Mexico has these, but softness is not prized
dry bags -- like what river rafters use--you have to get your gear back and forth in the dingy through the surf and everything can get wet!
short wine glasses-- tip proof
wine -- you'll miss CA vintages
coffee -- French roast isn't as popular in Mexico
engine oil -- different engines require different types--hard to get.
garden solar lights -- solar power stored all day helps you find your boat at night when you've gone off in your dingy and it's pitch black and every boat looks the same.  Replacement batteries for these lights.
citronella candles and other bug repellant

gifts for kids and families-- it's nice to give gifts and colored pens and pencils are great, candy, clothing, magazines are all well received.
diving equipment -- any gear you have for seeing what's underwater--it's wonderful!
man overboard strobe lights -- it's dark out there and these need to be attached to life jackets.
baked beans
paprica
shrimp sauce
plastic bags of all kinds
pickle relish --
the cruisers like potluck potatoe salad, and this ingredient is just not in the stores.

This list illustrates some of the preparation for provisioning that a trip to Mexico takes.  Provisioning will be a big part of our time in San Diego.  Hope you like the list.  We have some cruisers on the blog, so the list may help some other folks on their way south!
View Article  Newport Beach ....
We have been dividing our time between Newport and Glendora.  Projects for Mike's Mom and projects for the boat.  Kay got to garden----getting hands dirty for perhaps the last time in a few months....  will surely miss gardening!

We'll be in Newport, probably until the weekend.  Are waiting for some fabric to sew a sun cover for over the boom. Would like to leave the sewing machine behind, but if the fabric is still in the mail, it may come along to San Diego.  We're at the point that new stuff for the boat should serve two functions--for example, the support for the tent-like sun cover is going to be a boat hook we picked up second hand at Minney's --the most used boat stuff you could ever find in one place--it's in Newport.

Watch for more pictures as we get back on board full time...  hope to get internet access in San Diego.  Also, a search for Baja Ha-Ha on line will give more info about our fun race to Cabo.  Latitude 38 magazine also has lots of info on the Ha-Ha.
