We have been in the Sea of Cortez for over a month and are really loving the adventure of being here. The natural beauty of the place has had a great impact on both of us. Imagine the most beautiful cliffs and crags of the southwest transported into a turquoise sea filled with sea mammals, fish and invertebrates---thousands of species. Every day is awesome in the changing sky, shadows, sea and birdlife that just explodes all around you. I believe it is especially wonderful from our point of view being on a boat, right in the environment. It surrounds us. While you may have contact with one or two birds a day at home, or some feeding in a bird feeder, in the Sea, there are hundreds that come close and that you can observe living their lives. They don't move out of the way for you by flying away. We have taken our dingy right next to pelicans on rocks, watched herons dance in the shallow lagoons to herd fish their way. And everywhere the light shines down into the water so you don't hardly even need to use a face mask and snorkle. On one snorkle dive we saw over 6 kinds of starfish in the space of twenty minutes, plus fish schools as brightly lit as those in Finding Nemo!
There are over 100 islands in the Sea and we have just scratched the surface. We have traveled as far north at Santa Rosalia and as far south at La Paz. Along the way we visited over 10 anchorages, some we could hardly bear to leave they were so interesting and we still had things we wanted to do before we moved on.
We have taken many photos, but they don't necessisarily give you the panoramic view and are hardly adequate. Hope you like the best of them in the Favorite Islands photo collection. Also, we have a hard time getting them onto the site due to the irregular operation of the wireless network at the marina here in La Paz. So, we have many more which I'll be printing up when we get to the states. So, when we get together with you, hopefully this summer, we can bore you with a slide show!
