Some areas in the Everglades are populated by Bald Cypress and even these seemingly dead trees (deciduous) are alive and the small ones are often very old, even though they are small due to so much water and so little soil.
In the Everglades, things are not always as they seem. See the hammocks --tree islands in the sea of grass--saw grass which is really a sedge and loves the watery environment.
